Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、Triboluminescence(結晶を粉砕した際に発光する現象)のメカニズム解明を目的とし、単一結晶一つ一つについて粉砕・発光の測定を行う。これを達成するために顕微鏡に粉砕用の圧子を設置し、印加圧力をモニターしながらその発光挙動を測定する。この方法によって結晶の数や圧力のかけ方に関する影響を排除し、直接的にTriboluminescenceを定量的に測定する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we used a hybrid microscope consisting of fluorescence microscope and atomic force microscope to investigate the mechanism of triboluminescence (luminescence when a crystal is fractured) at single microcrystal level. We have established an efficient method to create sub-micron crystals, and that we have also discovered that triboluminescence is not observed under microscopic scale.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

トリボルミネッセンスの歴史は長く、400年以上前から知られた現象である。その一方で、そのメカニズムについては、トリボルミネッセンスを示す結晶の統計を取り、その共通点から推測したものであり、憶測の域を超えない。本研究は、より理学的に有意義な直接的かつ定量性の為に蛍光顕微鏡と原子間力顕微鏡の同時測定を行い、バルクレベルとミクロレベルではトリボルミネッセンスの挙動が異なることを初めて明らかにした。
