Outline of Research at the Start

この研究はヒトの肺組織からII型肺胞上皮細胞を取り出して、性質を保ったまま培養できないかの検討を行うものである。II型肺胞上皮細胞は肺の幹細胞と考えられており、自己複製する能力と肺でのガス交換を行うI型肺胞上皮細胞に分化する能力を持ち、COPD、肺がん、肺線維症など様々な肺の病気の発症に重要な役割を果たしている。ヒトの肺からII型肺胞上皮細胞を取り出して培養する技術は確立されておらず、これまでヒトの肺の細胞を使った研究は困難だったが、肺の幹細胞の培養法が確立されれば、その細胞の性質をより理解できるだけでなく、肺の病気の原因解明や治療法確立につながるものと考えられる。
