Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
We examined polymorphisms in the second/fourth finger ratio (2D/4D), which is thought to be related to sex hormones during fetal life, and some previously reported SNPs in the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene in 1800 cases, and found that both mean 2D:4D and right 2D:4D were predominantly reduced in rs9340799 GG-type boys and girls, and boys showed a predominant decrease in 2D:4D. In 623 cases in which chemical substances were measured in the urine of mothers in early pregnancy, we examined the association between exposure to environmental chemicals and single nucleotide polymorphisms in the ESR1 gene and found that 2D:4D was predominantly higher in rs2077647 AG/GG boys in a population with high exposure to MEHP, a metabolite of phthalate esters.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
