Outline of Research at the Start

氷河上の鉱物ダストは雪氷藻類の栄養塩源として利用され，その微生物活動によって形成される暗色不純物（クリオコナイト）の生成量や表面アルベドの低下に影響している可能性がある．本研究では鉱物ダスト由来の栄養塩成分に着目し，その氷河内分布や動態が微生物生産やアルベド低下に及ぼす影響を評価することで北極域の氷河表面暗色化拡大メカニズムを解明する．さらに，暗色域のクリオコナイト形成には過去に氷床に飛来したダストが大きく寄与している可能性があることから，氷床コアを用いて今後暗色域への供給が予想される時代の鉱物の分析を行うことで暗色化拡大の将来予測を試みる．

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2022年度はグリーンランド氷床北東部のEGRIPアイスコア中の過去100年分の鉱物ダストの走査型電子顕微鏡観察（SEM-EDS）を行い、その粒径と組成がグリーンランド北西部のSIGMA-Dアイスコアとは大きく異なることを見いだした。また、100年間の鉱物組成の変動が大きいSIGMA-Dとは異なり、鉱物組成の変動が小さいことを明らかにした。2023年度は、この成果を学会で発表するとともに、論文としてまとめ、Climate of the Past誌へ投稿した。さらに、査読結果に基づき、SEM-EDSによって復元した鉱物ダスト組成を、連続融解分析法から得られたアイスコア中のダスト由来の元素濃度や、固体微粒子のデータと比較解析することで、アイスコアダストの起源とその変動要因の地理的な違いを生み出す要因について詳細な議論を行った。比較の結果、EGRIPはSIGMAに比べ、100年間を通じてダストの発生地域に大きな変化が見られないが、1970～1980年代を境にダストの発生源に僅かな変化が生じたことが明らかになった。EGRIPではアジア、ユーラシア北部、北アメリカの複数の起源からダストが供給されており、大気振動（AMO, NAO）あるいは中国でのダスト発生数の減少の影響を受けて、その寄与率が変化した可能性が示唆された。査読結果に基づき、原稿を改訂して再投稿を行ったところ、一名の査読者からは受理、もう一名の査読者からは再修正のリクエストがあったが、編集者の判断でリジェクトとなった。現在、別のジャーナルへの投稿に向けて再校正を行っている。

Reason

論文構成の大幅な修正および追加の分析に時間を要したため、予定していた総合地球環境学研究所（京都）での氷河上不純物のSr-Nd同位体分析を行うことができなかった。さらに、その論文がリジェクトされてしまった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度から新たに着任した海洋研究開発機構では、Sr-Nd同位体分析装置を有しており、さらに前処理の設備なども整っていることから、遅れていた氷河上不純物の同位体分析を進める。もしマシンタイムに制限がある場合は、提携企業に分析依頼を行うこともできるので、その可能性も検討する。
