Outline of Research at the Start

The present research aims to estimate the flavonoid intake in the general Japanese population, (II) determine the association of flavonoid intake with risk of cardiovascular disease, (III) examine the effects of flavonoid consumption on cardiovascular risk factors by conducting a meta-analysis.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We examined the association between flavonoid intake and risk of cardiovascular disease using the data of a large Japanese cohort study. We found that higher intake of flavonoids, compared with lower intake, was associated with an decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Regarding specific flavonoid-rich fruits, we observed significant inverse associations for citrus fruit, strawberry, and grapes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
