Outline of Research at the Start

種間競争は生物群集を形作る上で重要なメカニズムの一つだが、菌類では種間競争を説明する有効なモデルが未だ提案されていない。動物や植物と異なり、生息基質が食物資源でもある菌類の種間競争の理解には、空間獲得競争と資源利用を基軸とした新たなモデルが必要とされている。菌糸体同士が遭遇すると、菌糸体の高密度化や二次代謝物質・酵素の生産、CO2放出が活発になることから、種間競争は菌糸体にとって炭素コストになると考えられている。本研究では、競争時の菌類の炭素配分と資源利用を測定することで競争コストを推定し、有機物分解との関係を含んだ新しい競争モデルを提案する足がかりとする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

To demonstrate fungal interspecific competition by computer simulation, we developed agent-based model including carbon allocation strategies of fungi. The model consists of mycelia as agents, their growth, secondary metabolites production, and nutrient transfer as behavioural tactics. Also, we described the effect of secondary metabolites on competitor's growth as interspecific interactions, and the effects of temperature stress on fungal behavioural tactics. Based on this model, we developed an computer simulator to represent fungal competition.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

菌種間競争を説明する有効なモデルの構築は長年追求されてきた研究課題であるが、これまで化学分析や遺伝子解析等における技術的な限界のために明確なモデルを示すことができなかった。本研究は、複雑な菌類群集の分解機能という生態学的に極めて重要なテーマにおける有効なブレイクスルーを提案できると考えられ、挑戦する意義は大きい。その成果からは、温暖化による炭素循環への影響の予測精度向上や、効率的なバイオマスエネルギー変換法など、様々な分野への応用が期待できる。
