Outline of Research at the Start

ALTが持つ言語リソースを把握し教育に還元すべく、本研究では複言語教育的授業の妥当性・実現可能性を検討するため、以下の研究を行う。
1)ALTの使用可能な言語リソースを把握するために調査を行う(大阪府、京都府、神奈川県、山形県、大分県内の複数の市町村を想定している)。
2)学級担任・ALTのニーズ分析調査を行い、実践者と協力して教室内の言語リソースを活かす授業を実践するために必要な研修方法と教材について検討する。
3)言語リソースを活かすための手引き・教材集を作成する。外国語教育関係者が簡単にアクセスまたは共有できるような複数言語教材・手引き等を収集したオンラインデータベースを作成、公開する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of this study was to develop a database for sharing teaching materials in order to maximise the potential language resources of assistant language teachers (ALTs) when teaching foreign languages in elementary schools.
The results showed that the majority of ALTs, who have previously been portrayed as English-only resources, are in fact users of languages other than English and Japanese, and that many ALTs are willing to introduce a greater degree of multi(pluri)lingualism into elementary school foreign language teaching.
Having ascertained that elementary school foreign language classrooms are in fact multilingual environments, teaching materials together were developed with the support of active teachers and ALTs. Bilingual Japanese/English lesson plans and materials for teachers were prepared and made available on an internet database.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

外国語教育は英語のみに焦点を当ててきたが、外国語は英語だけではない。実際、学習指導要領解説には「世界には英語以外の言語を話す人々も多い。…世界の人々を理解するには,英語以外の言語を使う人々の日常生活も取り上げることが大切である」(文部科学省、2018)との記述がある。しかし、英語以外の言語を取り上げるのに、その教育的な意義や、言語的多様性に対する理解不足などの障壁がある。
本研究は、従来「英語のみのリソース」として使われてきた外国語指導助手が実は多言語的な存在であると証明した上、彼らの言語を授業に導入するための教材開発と公開を行ったことにより、小学校外国語教育をより豊かにする手段が提供できた。
