Outline of Research at the Start

塵の中で激しい星形成を起こしている赤外線銀河の存在は約35年前に発見されたが、科学技術の進歩によって、ようやく赤外線、ミリ波・サブミリ波を用いた詳細な観測が可能となった。しかし、今まで調査された赤外線銀河は観測が比較的容易な極度に明るいものに限られる等、赤外線銀河という種族全体としての物理的性質の理解にはまだ至らない。本研究では、銀河個々の性質と銀河全体が従う経験則に着目することで、赤外線銀河がどのようにして宇宙の星形成史を決定づけているのかを系統的に評価する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

打ち上げが遅れていたジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡の科学運用が2022年7月に開始され、本研究のもう1つの軸となる研究を進めることができた。特に、近傍宇宙にある高光度赤外線銀河を世界最高の感度および空間分解能で観測し、激しい星形成および巨大ブラックホール周辺でのダストとガスの性質を調査した。
まず、合体途中の銀河のエネルギー源の正確な位置を世界で初めて突き止めた。このエネルギー源は宇宙塵(ダスト)に隠されハッブル宇宙望遠鏡でさえも観測することはできず、今回ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡を用いて初めてその場所を特定することができた。コンパクトながら莫大なエネルギーをもつことは申請者が先行研究で明らかにしていたが、今回の研究ではこのエネルギー源の大きさに強い上限をつけることができ、銀河全体からのエネルギーのうち多ければ70%はこの領域から放射されていることが分かった。この成果について、所属大学から和文と英文によるプレスリリース配信を行った。
もう1つの観測対象の銀河では、巨大ブラックホール周りにある星形成ディスクの観測を行った。このディスクには30ほどの星形成領域がハッブル宇宙望遠鏡で見つかっていたが、ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡を用いたことでその数を2倍に増やした。これらの新しく発見され星形成領域の色指数を求め、星形成進化モデルと比較した結果、これらの星形成領域は全て多くのダストを持ち、非常に若い星形成領域であることが分かった。

Reason

ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡がようやく打ち上がり、本研究で目指す銀河のガスおよびダストの性質を調査する手立てがたった。データも無事に取得し、予備研究のおかげでデータ解析もスムーズに進んだ。実際に論文を国際論文誌の投稿、受理された。新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大による影響も緩和され、ハイブリッド方式による研究交流も再開されつつあり議論もより活性化された。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本年度は主に撮像観測データの解析に取り組んだが、今後は分光観測によりガスの運動、ダストの性質、エネルギー源の正体を明らかにする。また、ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡による観測が開始されたばかりで、今後より深いデータ解析を行う必要がある。特に、それぞれの銀河単独の調査に限らず、さまざまな銀河を横断した系統調査に取り組みたい。
更にプロジェクトを発展させ、ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡で得た成果とALMA望遠鏡で得た成果を組み合わせることにも取り組む。
