Outline of Research at the Start

塵の中で激しい星形成を起こしている赤外線銀河の存在は約35年前に発見されたが、科学技術の進歩によって、ようやく赤外線、ミリ波・サブミリ波を用いた詳細な観測が可能となった。しかし、今まで調査された赤外線銀河は観測が比較的容易な極度に明るいものに限られる等、赤外線銀河という種族全体としての物理的性質の理解にはまだ至らない。本研究では、銀河個々の性質と銀河全体が従う経験則に着目することで、赤外線銀河がどのようにして宇宙の星形成史を決定づけているのかを系統的に評価する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

前年度では宇宙最盛期(赤方偏移2-3程度)での銀河がもつ分子ガスの研究を中心に進めたが、本年度では更に遠方宇宙の銀河に着目し銀河の星間ガスとダストについての研究を実施した。
この研究では共同筆頭研究者として申請し取得したALMA望遠鏡の大型プロジェクト観測時間を用い、赤方偏移7-8の初期宇宙での赤外線銀河をかつてない大きなサンプル(40天体)で調査した。測光赤方偏移により選択したこれらのターゲットを分光スキャン観測することで、遠赤外線領域にある炭素の1階電離輝線[CII]または酸素の2階電離輝線[OIII]を検出し、まずはその分光赤方偏移を得ることで銀河までの正確な距離を求めた。本研究では、これまで10年以上積み重ねられてきた静止系紫外線を用いて初期宇宙銀河を分光同定する手法とほぼ同等の初期宇宙銀河の数を約1年で同定するという、画期的な成果を得ている(査読論文受理済)。
また、[CII]または[OIII]を観測した際に、同時にダスト連続光放射も検出した。研究代表者は主にダスト連続光放射の解析を主導し、そのカタログ作成を行った。ターゲットの40天体中16天体でダスト放射を検出し、そのうち12天体は本研究で始めて発見されたものとなった。この研究によりダスト連続光放射をする初期宇宙銀河の既知数を3倍にも増やす大きな成果を挙げることができている(査読論文投稿中)。その中で、更に静止系紫外線では未検出の「隠れ銀河」も発見し、Nature論文として出版され、国際プレスリリースが行われ、ラジオ番組やYoutube番組の取材があった。

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

研究計画にて予定されていた通りに研究を進展させることができている。新型コロナウイルス感染症蔓延の中、より遠方の銀河を対象にしたALMA望遠鏡観測も一部を除きほぼ無事に観測され、データ解析を進め、論文化することができている。
しかし、一部(6天体)のALMA望遠鏡観測はまだ実施が完了しておらず、データを取得することができていない。2022年度にはこれらの観測が既遂されることを期待する。また、世界に散らばる研究協力者との交流がオンラインに限られ、直接交流する機会を得ることがまだ出来ていない。国際会議等の場で他研究者との意見交換も実現できずにいる。2022年度には現地での議論を実現させ、新たな研究構想に繋げられる場を設けられることを望んでいる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

国内外での学会や研究会の現地開催が徐々に再開されていることに期待し、2022年度では国際・国内会議に対面参加し得られた成果を発表できることを期待している。国内外にいる研究協力者を直接訪問し、密接な議論をすることで新たな研究アイディアを発展させ新プロジェクトを構築したい。
また、今年度に得られた成果をもとに、ALMA望遠鏡や他望遠鏡によるフォローアップ観測を実現させるために観測プロポーザルを申請し、本研究を更に伸展させる。
