Outline of Research at the Start |

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We analyzed the correlation between periodontal disease and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) from clinical laboratory data, peripheral blood, saliva, and plaque of patients with cardiovascular disease obtained during the 3-year large-scale study conducted at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. From the collected data, inflammatory markers common to periodontal disease and PAD were investigated in peripheral blood and periodontal bacteria were also evaluated, and statistical analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between each parameter. The serum levels of several inflammatory markers and the number of missing teeth were statistically significantly higher in patients with PAD than in controls. There was also an increased odds ratio in the PAD group for the number of missing teeth. The results of the study were presented at 106th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology last year, where we achieved the best poster award in the clinical research session.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
