Outline of Research at the Start

雨水ハーベスティングは,比較的小規模なスケールにおいて自然の降水を生物生産に変換する過程である。これまでの研究で,過酷な塩性乾燥環境下にあるヨルダン地溝帯に,砂漠の洪水を灌漑用水に変換する自律分散型灌漑スキームを構築した。また,冷涼なヨルダン高地,高温乾燥と寒冷湿潤の対極が著しいイラク北部でも,農業気象を自動観測している。本研究では,ヨルダン高地にマイクロ集水域での水分捕捉を行う実験圃場を新設しつつ,実験科学上の知見を数理科学の方法論にもとづいて記述,普遍化することにより,雨水ハーベスティングが,肥沃な三日月地帯全域における水と農業の脆弱性を克服するために有効であることを明らかにする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は,塩性乾燥環境下にあるヨルダン地溝帯の死海沿岸部から冷涼なヨルダン高地,さらには,イラクのニネベ平原を含むメソポタミアへとつづく,肥沃な三日月地帯を対象としている。肥沃な三日月地帯において,水と農業の脆弱性に対して頑強な地域を実現するには,雨水ハーベスティング(RWH)が実行可能なソリューションとなりうるという仮説を置く。その仮説を検証するための,肥沃な三日月地帯の各地域における脆弱性の因果律,ならびに, RWHに関する,科学的方法論の構築を目的としてきた。
ヨルダン,イラク,日本に,さまざまな実験観測サイトを設置,運用してきた。当該年度には,2022年度までに行った,窒素循環過程に関する作物栽培試験,および,蒸発の制御に関する精密な実験に対する,数理的方法論の構築に重点を置いた。また,実際に運用中のRWHについてフィールド調査を行いつつ,本課題において提起される新たな学術的課題を整理し,国際共同研究チームの強化を進めた。
2020年以来,肥沃な三日月地帯全域において深刻な渇水が生じ,地下水資源に過度に依存した灌漑農業が急速に普及してきた。また,当該年度後半にはパレスチナ問題が緊迫化し,地政学的緊張の中で水や農業を脆弱性を克服することの意義が改めて認識された。そこで,前年度までに提案した交差・退化・特異拡散を含む準線型偏微分方程式系に加え,地下水のモデル化に重要な多孔質媒体方程式,競争,共存,棲み分けを包括的に扱いうる非線型生態系モデル,頑強なソリューションの提示に有効なロバスト最適化手法などについて,文献渉猟,数理解析,数値実験を行った。また,人文科学や応用数学の研究者,さらには,ヨルダンやイラクのさまざまなステークホルダーとの協力体制を整備し,実質的な学際的協働を実施した。

Reason

RWHは,比較的小規模なスケールにおいて自然の降水を生物生産に変換する過程である。過酷な塩性乾燥環境下にあるヨルダン地溝帯のGサイトでは,砂漠の洪水を灌漑用水に変換する自律分散型灌漑スキームを2013年に構築し,ナツメヤシを試験作物として継続的に運用してきた。ヨルダン高地に位置するRサイトのオリーブ園は,従来天水のみに依存していたが,2020年以来の渇水を受けて灌漑を行うようになった。高温乾燥と寒冷湿潤の対極が著しいイラク北部のMサイトでは,2019年より小規模な実験施設において農業気象を自動観測している。これらの3サイトで収集したさまざまな自然科学的データは,環境・農業・人間の相互作用記述する高度な数理モデルの開発に対する動機づけとなってきた。一方,ヨルダン科学技術大学とは,大学院教育とも連携し,マイクロRWHの模型実験,貯水池における蒸発や水質の最適管理,バイオチャーによる土壌改良,意図的な水ストレスによるポジティブフィードバック灌漑など,多様な共同研究を実施した。2022年度に愛媛大学構内に設けた試験圃場で実施した,窒素固定作物のクローバーと非窒素固定作物のミントの栽培試験からは,高い汎用性を有する非線型生態系モデルの開発に至った。一方,ニネベ平原については,インタビュー調査を実施し,既往の気象データや数値実験の結果と併せて,褶曲山地に発する突発的洪水を平野部の帯水層へ誘導する地下水涵養型RWHという着想を得たが,具体的な設計や最適運用戦略については確固とした結論には至っていない。
日本側研究者が渡航できないイラクを対象に含む国際共同研究であるが,ヨルダンとイラクの研究協力者の尽力により,効率的な活動を行うことができている。しかしながら,高度な数理解析を要するモデルを用いた研究であることにも起因し,日本側参画者を責任著者とする論文の出版において大きな遅れが生じている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2022年度に愛媛大学で実施した栽培試験については,非線型生態系モデルに関する論文を投稿したので,その査読過程への対応に注力する。また,肥沃な三日月地帯において生産,消費の両面において最重要作物の一つであるオリーブについて,FAOやWMOが公表している統計データと各サイトのデータをもとに,隔年結果や同期現象などを再現する別の非線型生態系モデルについての研究を継続中であり,問題点を早急に解決して論文を完成させる。これらをさらに発展させ,とくに,交差・退化・特異拡散を含む準線型偏微分方程式系へ拡張し,社会的脆弱性をも記述する統一理論を構築する。
ニネベ平原において展開する地下水涵養型RWHについては,まず,多孔質媒体方程式を用いた物理現象のモデル化,非整数階微積分方程式の最適制御問題にもとづく運用戦略の導出を考える。これに,上述の非線型生態系モデルを組み合わせ,社会的脆弱性を克服する地下水涵養型RWHを実行可能かつ頑強なソリューションとして提示することを目指す。Gサイトの自律分散型灌漑スキームは,本課題で雇用している実験補助者の経験知を数理手法から導出される最適戦略と併用して運用しているため,その知見をニネベ平原において展開する地下水涵養型RWHへアップスケールすることは極めて有効である。そのため,Gサイトで用いる実験観測機器の購入,実験補助者の雇用に,予算を充てることを計画している。
以上の研究には,地域の社会経済に関する深い理解,ならびに,応用数学に関する最先端の知見が不可欠なので,学際的な国際共同研究を一層推進する。
一方,昨今の円安とヨルダンでの物価上昇もあり,深刻な資金不足が予想されている。後継の科研費(海外連携研究)の他,ヨルダン側のファンドへも応募し,必要な予算の確保を計画している。
