Outline of Research at the Start

自分自身を変えずに異なる食物を消化する能力の基盤を解明するため、野生大型類人猿3種の糞を用いた試験管内発酵試験と腸内細菌の遺伝子解析を行い、食物の質の低い東南アジア(ボルネオ)のオランウータンでは、アフリカ(ガボン)のゴリラ・チンパンジーよりも、腸内細菌による高繊維食物の発酵能力が高いこと、同所的チンパンジーに比べ、葉食傾向の強いゴリラが、腸内細菌による高繊維食物の発酵能力が高いかを検証する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行のため、野生大型類人猿の調査を延期していたが、2022年度から海外渡航が再開され、2022年度にマレーシアでの野生オランウータンの調査を、実施したのち、本年度は、2月から3月にガボンに渡航し、野生ゴリラ・チンパンジーを対象にした試料採取を実施した。得られた糞便試料を用い、ゴリラ、チンパンジー、オランウータン、飼育および野生のニホンザルが採食する食物9種の乾燥粉末の基質を用いて、発酵実験を行ったところ、ゴリラとチンパンジーでは、ガスの生産量、pHの低下量のいずれも異なり、発酵の様式が異なることが示唆された。また、ガボンでの調査の予備調査を兼ねて、同様の実験を野生および飼育ニホンザルを対象にして実施し、それぞれの条件で採食している食物の発酵能力が高いことを示唆する結果を得た。

Reason

2022年度と2023年度に、野生大型類人猿の試料採取と発酵実験を行うことができたが、新型コロナウイルス流行による2年以上の調査の中断があったため、全体としてはまだ遅れている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度に、最後となるガボンでの2回目の野生大型類人猿の試料採取と試験管内発酵実験を行う。あわせて、新型コロナウイルス流行下で海外渡航できなかった間に実施した飼育大型類人猿の試験管内発酵実験で得られた試料の遺伝子解析等を至急行い、2024年度中に研究を完成させたい。
