Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
We conducted international collaborative research using monkeys to elucidate the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease and treat its symptoms by intervening in brain activity. 1) We identified the somatomotor region of the basal ganglia by stimulating the cerebral cortex and recording neural activity. 2) We found that the subthalamic nucleus is active in both executing and canceling movements. 3) We established a method to block the subthalamic activity using chemogenetic techniques. 4) We found that the fundamental change in Parkinson's disease is the reduced neurotransmission through the direct pathway. 5) We developed a treatment method that controls deep brain stimulation based on the movement initiation signal from the motor cortex. 6) We attempted to treat Parkinson's disease by intervening in the basal ganglia circuit using a viral vector.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
