Research Abstract |
私たちは、4テスラMRIを用いることでヒトのMT野のコラム構造を調べています。MT野には方向選択コラム構造が存在しており、2つの特徴があります。一つは、方向選択性は一方向に緩やかに変化することです。二つ目は、方向選択性はこの方向と異なる方向に180度急激に変化することです。MTコラムも高解像度fMRIにとってよいモデルとなります。しかしながら、ブロックデザイン実験で2つの刺激条件のみが必要とされた眼優位性コラムとは異なり、できるだけ多くの方向へ動く刺激条件をつくりだすことが望まれます。そこで私たちは事象関連fMRI実験課題を工夫して、さらに新しい解析手法を開発しました。被験者は撮像中ずっとランダムな方向に動くドットに対して順応状態にありました。時折、全てのドットが4つの方向のうち1つの方向に動きます。この4つの方向はランドムな順番で提示し、何度も繰り返されます。開発した手法を用いることで、一時的な動き方向の変化に対する応答を定量化して調べることができました。ヒトのMT野のほとんどのボクセルが、ある一方向への動きに対して良い応答を示すことがわかりました。この方向選択性はベクトル和で定量化することができました。ベクトルの方向はボクセルが好む方向を示しており、長さは方向選択性の強さを示しています。そこで、MT野に方向選択性の空間分布をみることができます。被験者のMTで各ボクセルから得られたベクトルの平均長さは0より著しく大きく、平均してある方向への動きに対してよい応答をしたことを示唆します。次に、隣り合うボクセルの方向選択性の違いにっいて調べました。実際、ほとんどの隣り合うボクセルは非常に似通った選択性を持つか、或は180度異なる選択性を持ちます。これはモデルとよく一致しています。これらの結果はヒトのMT方向選択性コラムを示した最初の報告になります。最近の研究で、360度の運動方向を連続的に変化する刺激を用いても、MT野に方向選択性を見出すことができます。
