Research Abstract

固体中電子は絶対ゼロ度で相関長が発散し、対称性を自発的に破った安定秩序相に至る。磁性体においてもまたスピン間に反強磁性相関がある場合、スピンが反平行に整列した状態が安定となる。しかし、スピンが正三角形または正四面体に配置され、相互作用間に拮抗が生じると、磁気相関長は発散せず量子スピン液体という量子揺らぎに支配された新奇電子相が現れることが理論的に指摘されている。しかしながら、実験的にこのスピン液体の候補はいくつか提案されている物の、実験的には最低温度領域において試料中に混入された不純物のために古典的長距離秩序を持つ物質が多かった。
近年、三次元幾何学的フラストレーションをもつパイロクロア構造を持つイリジウム酸化物が、新奇量子伝導の舞台として注目されている。我々は、スピンアイス的磁性と遍歴伝導を併せ持つ物質Pr2Ir207が、古典的磁気秩序を伴わないにも関わらず異常ホール効果が現れるという現象を発見した。これは、理論的には自発磁化を伴わないままカイラリティのみが巨視的に有限に残った場合に期待される挙動であり、新奇スピン状態の発見となっている可能性がある。さらに、共鳴磁気X線散乱法など、スピン相関の波数依存性を調べることを可能とするプローブを開発し、これまで中性子散乱によってしかあきらかとされなかったスピン相関を調べる手法を開発した。さらに、Pr2Ir207以外のパイロクロア構造を持つ物質において、希土類を変化させることによる異常ホール効果への影響を調べた。
