Research Abstract

Recently a family of O2-dependent prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing enzymes has been identified as a cellular oxygen sensing mechanism. Reduced prolyl hydroxylase activity facilitates an accumulation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1alpha). This study was designed to examine the effects of prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor, supplementation on muscle oxygen sensing mechanism. The present results suggest that prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor facilitates capillary angiogenesis and glycolytic enzyme activity via HIF-1alpha upregulation in hind-leg muscles.
