Research Abstract

I study history of nature conservation ideas and movements in prewar Japan, in socio-historical context. Sometimes nature conservation movement in this period is thought that it rested upon intellectuals, and connected with nationalism. But in fact, such movement was rested upon citizens and laymen. Their ideas of nature conservation transcended nationalism. They resisted to some big development project carried out as national policy.
