Research Abstract |
So far I have done research that aims at reconsidering the conventional understanding of flower-and-bird paintings in the Edo period. In the process of the research, I noticed the following point : Maruyama-Shijo school and Akita Ranga school and others, which are categorized as"Shaseiga school"in the Edo art history today, were consciously discovered by artists and art critics in the Meiji era, when the art genre of"modern Japanese painting"was created. In this study, I took a serious view of this point, and made it clear that the motifs and the subjects of realistic flower-and-bird paintings since the Edo period are closely related to the genre of"Bijin-ga"(pictures of beautiful women) and the art genres other than painting, such as design of applied arts-both of which had been previously thought to be irrelevant to flower-and-bird paintings. However, this fact is yet to be understood in the present Japanese art history studies. So, in this research, I kept investigating images, based on actual artworks. And also, I advanced verification of"comments"that were made on flower-and-bird paintings from the Meiji period to the early Showa period, by analyzing articles of newspapers and magazines. Through the above-mentioned analyses, as results, I have published two books and four papers from fiscal 2008 to 2011.And I am going to issue another book in fiscal 2012.
