Research Abstract |
This study explores how Shakespeare's fools and clowns are resurrected for the modern stage both in Japan and Britain after more than 400 years. Some try to act out a perfect court jester pleasing both onstage and offstage audiences ; some rely a little more heavily on physical comedy to elicit laughter from the audience. The Japanese actors equally suffer from Shakespeare's language, in translation, which is inevitably awkward however hard a translator tries to find the equivalent of what sometimes is nonsensical.
