Research Abstract |
It is unknown how mutant proteins responsible for familial Parkinson's disease result in nigral degeneration as well as where these protein localize in neuronal cells. We have revealed that LRRK2, in addition to alpha-synuclein and parkin, associates with lipid rafts, microdomains of cell membranes which play important roles in signal transduction and membrane trafficking in the cell. We have, furthermore, found membrane-binding potentials of DJ-1 and PINK1 proteins.
