Research Abstract |
Tissue edema during surgery delays recovery after surgery. This study investigated whether low-molecular weight (MW) hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solution reduces tissue edema during surgery. Low-MW HES significantly inhibited solute diffusion from polyacrylamide gel compared to high-MW HES. However, degree of tissue edema in patients undergoing open abdominal surgery was comparable for low-MW and high-MW HES, suggesting no apparent effect of reduction of tissue edema for low-MW HES.
