Research Abstract |
This research investigates possible methods to improve gender responsive budgeting (GRB) in Japan, drawing upon experience from undertaking GRB projects in other Asia-Pacific countries. The practice of GRB incorporates not only gender budget analysis but also the analysis of budget processes and political systems, as budget allocations typically depend upon political will. To successfully integrate GRB, this research suggests that the Japanese Government needs to improve the quality of existing GRB-related activities. This could be achieved by strengthening the Gender Equality Bureau's monitoring function and introducing gender indicators within existing policy evaluation. Such activities will ultimately encourage a society with greater gender equality.
