Research Abstract

We revealed the impaired expression of duodenal iron transporters in Dahl salt-sensitive heart failure rats. Duodenal expression of crucial iron transporters, such as duodenal cytochrome b, divalent metal transporter 1, and ferroportin was not up-regulated in the heart failure rats despite being under iron-deficient conditions. As a result, our data suggests that impaired intestinal iron absorption may play an important role in the pathogenesis of anemia in heart failure.
