Research Abstract |
We examine the impacts of the working hours of elderly Japanese men on their health outcome, taking into account an endogeneity between work and health. Utilizing panel data on the Japanese elderly, we found that 1) present health status of older Japanese men depend on their past job characteristics (the long-term effect), and 2) while Japanese elderly males prefer to work for relatively fewer hours as they become older, working in old age increases their health level (the short-term effect).
