チベット高原はインド亜大陸とユーラシア大陸の衝突が起こる場所にあり、地球物理学・地質学の観点からみて極めて地殻の活動度が高く、第四紀の火山に加えて地震活動も旺盛である。地下の流体試料に含まれるヘリウムを含む揮発性元素の同位体組成は地震・火山活動をモニターする際の最適な地球化学トレーサであり、チベット高原で得られた知見は我が国の地震・火山調査研究にも役立つであろう。
