Outline of Research at the Start

DUX4 is ectopically expressed in Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) muscles, resulting in a production of potentially toxic proteins. μ-Crystallin (Crym) is known to be abnormally upregulated in the muscles of patients with FSHD. The aim of this study is to characterise the function of Crym in skeletal muscle to develop therapeutic strategies for FSHD disease. We will investigate whether DUX4 toxicity is suppressed by Crym inactivation in muscle using DUX4-expressing Crym KO mice.
