Larvaceans are a group of filter-feeding zooplankton found in all the world’s oceans, but surprisingly little is known about their population structure and genetic diversity. The larvacean that we most specialize in is Oikopleura dioica. It is one of the smallest larvaceans known - both in size and genetic composition - and its life cycle in the lab is only 4 days, making it an ideal model for our experiments. In our lab, we analyze the genetic information of O. dioica and other larvaceans and use this to understand how these mysterious organisms survive and evolve.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2021, I contributed to two studies on genetic variation in O. dioica. The first reports that the species O. dioica may in fact be a species complex representing multiple lineages. The second demonstrates a considerable degree of genetic rearrangement in these species, which is unique among chordates and perhaps all metazoa. We began follow-up studies to examine the effects of this rearrangement on gene expression, achieving two important milestones in FY2021. In FY2020, we established the ATACseq method. In FY2021 we completed sampling and sequencing for RNAseq and ATACseq in two O. dioica populations, across developmental time points. We also established the hybridization chain reaction in O. dioica to accurately observe the spatiotemporal patterns of expression in real time.
