Outline of Research at the Start

世界最大のニュートリノ検出器・スーパーカミオカンデでは2020年よりガドリニウムを導入する SK-Gd 実験が稼働する。その実験での超新星背景ニュートリノの発見が本研究の目的である。宇宙誕生から現在までの140億年の間に起こった超新星爆発により放出され、現在の宇宙に漂っている超新星背景ニュートリノの発見は、宇宙の歴史や恒星進化の謎に対するブレイクスルーとなる。本研究では、素粒子・原子核実験での精密測定を通してスーパーカミオカンデ検出器の性能を極限まで引き出し、宇宙物理学の歴史に新たな一歩を記すことを目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

大質量の恒星はその一生の最後に超新星爆発を起こす。その際、爆発の99%以上のエネルギーはニュートリノによって宇宙空間にばらまかれる。宇宙に最初の星ができて以来、超新星爆発は約1秒に1回の頻度で絶えず起きており、その都度ニュートリノが宇宙にまき散らされる。このニュートリノは超新星背景ニュートリノ(SRN)と呼ばれ、世界中で探索が進められているが、未だ発見には至っていない。世界最大のニュートリノ検出器スーパーカミオカンデ(SK)でSRNを発見するのが本研究の目的である。
2021年度の成果としては、まず、２０２０年夏に始まったSK-Gd実験で期待通りの検出器性能を発揮していることを確認したことである。特に放射線源（AmBe）を用いた検出器較正により、中性子の検出効率を高精度で導出した。その後も検出器は安定して稼働している。
本研究ではSKのデータ解析に加え、加速器を用いた素粒子・原子核反応の精密測定で、SRN発見に最も重要な大気ニュートリノによる背景事象の理解を進める。大気ニュートリノ反応の中でも、ニュートリノと水中の酸素原子核との中性カレント準弾性散乱(NCQE)と呼ばれる反応がSRNによる反応と全く区別がつかないため、この反応を精密に理解することが鍵となる。そこでNCQE 反応を、素性のよくわかったニュートリノビームを同じSK検出器で捉えるT2K実験で測定する。ここでT2K実験における NCQE反応の精度を上げるために、ニュートリノビームの不定性を削減する NA61/SHINE実験と、酸素原子核と核子とのビーム実験を行う。前者では、我々が提案した実験が正式に採用され、一度は延期されたが、2022年度の夏に実施されることが決定した。後者では、理化学研究所の RIBF を用いた全く新たな実験を実施すべく、関係する研究者と議論を開始した。

Reason

２０２０年度に新たに始まったSK-Gd実験のデータ解析を進めた。特に中性子の検出効率の評価については、代表者と分担者、指導する学生がチームとして協力して、中性子線源を用いた検出器較正を行い、期待通りの性能を発揮していることを確認した。さらに延期となった電子加速器や中性子発生装置を用いた検出器較正も実施した。これらの成果を国内外での研究会で報告した。SRN探索のデータ解析を開始するとともに、2022年度に予定している硫酸ガドリニウムの追加導入に向けた準備を進めた。
T2K実験では、諸事情でなかなかデータ取得が難しい状況ではあったが、それでもシミュレーションによる評価など、本研究のメンバーが研究を主導した。
NA61/SHINE 実験については、我々のグループが提案した陽子とT2K標的(炭素)とのハドロン反応により発生するK粒子測定実験が、2022年度６月から５週間のデータ取得が正式に決定した。2021年度は実験に向けた準備を進め、必要なデータが取得できる状況になった。この実験により、T2K実験のニュートリノフラックスの不定性の削減が期待できる。
核子と酸素原子核との反応の測定実験については、理化学研究所のRIBFのグループと議論を進めている。2021年度は具体的な実験に向け、課題の洗い出しや実験の実現性、期待できる物理の評価など、理論研究者も交えて、ブレインストーミングを行っている。2022年度中には実際の実験を提案できる状況である。
以上の成果は研究計画に記載したスケジュール通りに進んでいることから、本研究は概ね順調に進展していると評価した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

SK-Gd 実験については、2021年度に行った検出器較正データを用いたシミュレーションプログラムのチューニングを完成させる。また、取得したデータのクォリティをチェックし、検出器の安定性を評価した上で、2021年度中に確立した中性子捕獲手法を用いて、SRN探索を進める。
T2K実験については第一期データの詳細な解析を行い、NCQE解析の手法を確立する。また次のニュートリノビームに向けた準備、特にシミュレーションプログラムと解析ツールの開発を進める。ただ、昨今の社会状況により直ちに大量のT2K実験データを取得することはなかなか困難となっていることから、過去のデータを再解析することも検討している。
NA61/SHINE実験は、2022年度に行う陽子とT2K標的(炭素)とのハドロン反応により発生するK粒子測定実験の準備を鋭意進める。データを取得後は、解析を進め、出来るだけ早急に結果を導出する。
原子核実験については、実験手法を確定し、実験遂行に必要な準備を進める。
