Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the masting phenomenon, it is essential to uncover the "black box" of belowground nitrogen dynamics. In a Fagus crenata forest, we identified the fine-root distribution of six individual trees using genetic markers. Our findings suggest that masting may result from evolutionary selection favoring insulation from spatial heterogeneity in soil nutrient availability, thereby enhancing reproductive success. Inorganic nitrogen is implicated as a potential trigger for floral bud initiation. Additionally, we clarified the role of non-structural carbohydrates in supporting mast seeding. These results have been published in six international journals. Furthermore, six collaborative studies with international teams, aimed at understanding the evolutionary regulation of resource allocation in woody plant reproduction, were published in leading scientific journals.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
