| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、京都の伝統的美術工芸が近代化した過程を、制作・教育・流通などの視点を加えつつ、分野横断的研究をおこなうことにより明らかにする。とくに、図案教育、東西交流などの視点を重視しつつ。独創的な視点から京都における伝統的美術工芸の近代化の実態解明につとめる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In FY2020, we clarified the early aspects of the Kyoto Higher School of Arts and Crafts, which opened in 1902, through joint research. In particular, we were able to clarify the role played by chemists such as Iwata Nakazawa, the first principal of the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, and Tsurumaki Tsurukazu, the second principal. The role of chemists in the modernization of arts and crafts has never been clarified, not only in Kyoto but also in other regions. The first achievement was to clarify this point. The second was a joint research project on the role of textbooks created by painters in modern painting and design education. This research clarified the roles played by the instructional manuals created by the Japanese-style painter Kose Shoseki and the Western-style painter Asai Chu, respectively.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
今回の研究でもっとも学術的意義が大きいと考えるのは、美術工芸の近代化に化学者さらには文学・歴史など美術工芸以外の専門家がどのように関与して、どのような成果をあげたかを明らかにした点である。これまでの近代研究は、制作者の技術改良や様式展開という美術工芸内での活動に焦点をあてて進められてきた傾向にあるが、本研究では、積極的に美術工芸外からのアプローチについて分析することにより、新たな知見を得ることができた。さらに、化学者に関しては、化学者の方から美術工芸に積極的にかかわった部分と、美術工芸の側から化学者の学知を有効に活用しようと協力を求めた部分をそれぞれ明確にすることができた。
