近現代の欧米や日本の美術作品のなかで、「生に終わりがあること」「生の儚さ、うつろいやすさ」の観念がどのように表現されているかを、17世紀オランダの「ヴァニタス」絵画の定型表現や、疫病の流行から生まれた「死の舞踏」などを手掛かりに明らかにする。美術の伝統的な図像が、現代にどのように「回帰」し、変化をとげているのか。死を意識した人生観である「ヴァニタス」は、複雑な時間意識の構造をもっており、メランコリーや憂鬱にも、また限りある生を味わいつくそうとする高揚感にもつながる。ドイツで進められている同テーマの研究プロジェクトと交流しながら、西洋と日本の死生観の表現における共通点と相違点をさぐる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study is an international joint research project being conducted in Germany that applies the concept of “vanitas” in early modern Baroque art to the analysis of contemporary art. The theme of “vanitas” (transience of life) in 17th century Dutch still life paintings had a variety of meanings, including a sense of time, “mortality (=life with an end),” and a heightened sense of vitality due to the awareness of death. Based on overseas examples of the “return” of this concept of vanitas in contemporary art and incorporating a transcultural perspective, this study project clarifies the Japanese view of life and death and the view of impermanence (Mujoh) expressed in contemporary art and photography.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は西洋バロック美術のヴァニタス表現を起点に、モチーフやメディウム（表現媒体）を新たにした近現代の美術を解読するだけでなく、文化や宗教も異なる日本の現代美術や写真を分析するもので、時代と文化を超えたスケールをもつものである。日独共同研究という枠組みで、本プロジェクトの成果をドイツにフィードバックでき、英語圏にも広く発信できたことは大きな意味をもっている。アートや写真について、生の儚さや移ろいの表象や、不条理な死に対する批判を読み解くことは、戦争や疫病、自然災害などに晒された現代の死生観を問い直す意義もあるといえる。
