Outline of Research at the Start

本研究課題は、これまで急峻な地形と複雑な島嶼が十分に表現できない解像度で扱われ、未解明であった西部北太平洋モンスーン域の中核的な「陸」であるフィリピン諸島に着目し、フィリピン諸島を表現可能な(1)高解像度数値シミュレーションによる感度実験と(2)高密度な現地観測データを用いることによって、西部北太平洋モンスーンにおける降水特性を日変化から年々変動までのマルチタイムスケールで再描写し、大気大循環モデルにおける降水の再現性向上に直結する「本質的に重要な時空間スケールおよび物理過程」を解明する。また、東アジア・東南アジアの気候システムに対する影響を考察する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究課題の目的は、急峻な地形と複雑な島嶼で特徴づけられるフィリピン諸島の降水を高時空間解像度で解析することで、大気大循環モデルにおいて再現性が十分でない西部北太平洋モンスーンの降水特性を、日変化を含む対流スケールから季節内変動、季節変動のマルチスケールで解明することである。

フィリピン国内における現地での降水量観測データ解析から、季節変化スケールでの降水変化として、夏の南西モンスーン入りの後のモンスーン降雨の休止期の出現状況を気候学的に解明した。また、マニラ首都圏における時間スケールの極端降水をもたらす総観規模スケールの擾乱の寄与について明らかにすると共に、降水活動に影響する台風がフィリピン中南部を横断する際の強度や経路の変化についても明らかにした。

数値モデルを用いた研究では、NICAMを用いたフィリピンの地形を除去した数値実験を行った。2018年夏季を対象とする実験では、フィリピン東海域で対流活動や強い渦擾乱の発生が活発化し、モンスーンに伴う下層西風が強化される傾向がみられ、フィリピンの地形が西風をブロックすることで、対流活動と循環場の結合関係に影響を及ぼす可能性が示唆された。また、数値モデルにおけるフィリピン陸域および周辺海域の降水日変化特性については、全球雲解像モデルを用いた気候再現実験であるNICAM HighResMIP実験及びNICAM AMIP実験における再現性を人工衛星プロダクトや現場観測データと比較して調査した。その結果、陸上の午後の降水極大に比べて、周辺海域の夜間~早朝の極大については実験間で再現性の差が大きいことが分かった。これには対流圏下層の背景風の再現性が寄与しており、アジアモンスーン域に固有の問題も示唆された。

Reason

コロナ禍によりフィリピン気象局やManila Observatoryを訪問しての情報交換が困難な状況であったが、研究実施計画に従い、既存の現地データ解析からフィリピン諸島における季節変化の気候学的特徴などを把握したほか、数値モデルを用いた気候実験中のフィリピン諸島における降水の再現性評価や、フィリピンの地形に対する感度実験などが順調に進み、一定の成果が得られている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

引き続き、現地観測データの解析をさらに進めると共に、研究成果をまとめ論文を作成し出版する。NICAMやSCALE-RMを用いた数値実験を進めることで、フィリピンの降水活動と擾乱との関係を解析する。特に、昨年度の感度実験からフィリピン東海域での渦擾乱の個数は標準実験の方が多いが、擾乱の持続時間は短い傾向があった。大規模な循環場と対流を構成する擾乱との関係や季節内振動との関係について詳細に解析すると共に、対流活動・降水の再現性と東南アジア・東アジアの季節進行再現性との関係を明らかにする。感度実験は積分区間を伸ばしサンプル数を増やすことで気候学的な議論に繋げる。また、引き続きフィリピンにおける現地研究者との連携を深め、現地降水量などのデータ解析も進める。
