本研究では、イギリス都市史の個別実証研究の成果を総合し、都市に居住することの効用という観点から都市化のメカニズムについて定性的な分析を行うとともに、工業化に先立つ都市化の要因を可能な限り数値データでそろえ、計量分析を行うことを目的とする。
近年、イギリス産業革命にとって、それに先立つ都市化の進展が重要な役割を果たしたという主張がなされ大きな影響力を持っている。他方で、イギリス都市史研究には分厚い研究史が存在するにもかかわらず、一国全体をカバーした計量的な分析はこれまで行われてこなかった。本研究を通じて、この空隙が埋められることが期待される。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project explored the relationship between the function of early modern cities and economic development in England before the 19th-century urbanisation associated with the Industrial Revolution. As part of the analysis of England as a whole, the Universal Directory, a professional register published at the end of the 18th century, and the Medical Register, a register of medical professionals, were digitised, and town boundaries were determined using QGIS. As individual case studies, we also analysed the commercial function of smaller local towns (Lewes and Bury St Edmunds) and London's water supply companies. By exploring London's water supply companies and epidemic control, we also revealed that towns and cities were struggling with the disamenities caused by rapid population growth.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
イギリス経済史において、都市化は産業革命期に族生する工業都市とともに語られることが多いが、工業化以前においても都市化は進行しており、産業革命期に目立った工業化を経験しなかった都市も緩やかに成長していた。その背景には、製造業の発展とは異なる成長要因が働いていたと考えられる。そのメカニズムを明らかにし、人口集積によってもたらされる都市のディスアメニティへの対応を分析した本研究は、1688-1815年頃を指す「長い18世紀」における都市化の理解を深めるという学術的意義を持つとともに、脱工業化社会と呼ばれる現代においてなお都市化が加速している事態についても示唆を与えるものである。
