The procedure and contents of catalytic electrode fabrication and the type and amount of various additives added to the catalyst were investigated as conditions to improve the air cathode performance of microbial fuel cells. After examining the optimum values for the amount of conductive carbon black as a conductive aid and the amount of PTFE as a binding agent, using an activated carbon catalyst, the cathode dispersed using an ultrasonic homogenizer showed approximately 70% improvement in oxygen reduction performance compared to the cathode prepared by a general method using a platinum catalyst.
