Outline of Research at the Start

ゲル、ガラス、光ファイバーなどに代表されるソフトマター、アモルファス物質は、結晶とは大きく異なる特異な力学的(硬さ、成型加工のしやすさ、壊れやすさなど)・熱的性質(熱の伝わり方など)を持ち、古くから様々な分野で人類に大きく貢献してきた。しかしながら、原子や分子が周期的にきれいに並んだ結晶とは異なり、これらの物質は乱れた構造を持つため、その物理的な理解は大きく遅れている。そこで、この状況を打破すべく、系の内部での力のバランスに新たに着目することで、ガラスやゲルに代表される物質に共通して現れる特異な力学的・熱的物性発現の物理的機構の解明、さらには、これらの材料の性能向上の基本指針の確立を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1)ソフトマターの力学的組織化と力学的最適設計:
コロイドのゲル状態とガラス状態は、ともに乱れた粒子配置構造を持ちながら固体のように振る舞うという共通点を持ち、これまでゲルの固体化はガラス化によりもたらされると考えられてきた。これに反し、田中らは、コロイドと溶媒の相分離過程で、固さを持つ最小の構造ユニットである四面体構造が形成され、それらが逐次的で階層的に組織化することで、ゲルの固体性が現れることを発見した。また、生体の細胞内相分離における粘弾性効果の重要性を初めて指摘した。さらに、田中、高江らは、荷電ソフトマター系の自己組織化における静電相互作用・流体力学的相互作用の協奏の役割を明らかにした。また、山本らは自己泳動粒子が柔らかい界面を貫通する動的機構について新たな知見を得た。
2)力学的トポロジーと流動:田中らは、繰り返しずり変形下における疲労破壊の機構を、ずり変形による密度揺らぎの自己増殖的な増大という観点明らかにした。また、古川は、ガラス形成液体のフラジリティと非線形ずり流動挙動の関係を明らかにすることに成功した。また、田中らは自己駆動回転粒子系が生み出す二次元乱流化によりもたらされる、粗大化を伴わない特異な相分離現象を発見した。
(3)相互作用ネットワークトポロジーに基づくアモルファス物質の物性解明:田中らは、ボゾンピークとして知られる、アモルファス物質に普遍的にみられる振動状態の異常性の起源が、有限な長さを持つ一次元的なひも状の協同的な粒子振動に起因していることを初めて明らかにした。また、田中らは、2次元ガラスを用い、アモルファス状態における遅い内部緩和の機構を明らかにすることに成功した。さらに、山本らは、散乱実験によりガラス形成液体の動的不均一性を評価するための新しい方法を提案した。

Reason

コロイドゲルの弾性発現機構について:これまでは、コロイドゲル化、すなわち、コロイド分散系における相分離の凍結とそれに伴う固体化は、コロイドを多く含む相のガラス化によると考えられた。しかし、コロイドゲルが形成するネットワーク構造の腕の太さが高々数粒子程度であることを考えると、粒子レベルで多孔的な構造を持つゲルと高密度に充填された構造を持つガラスとを同一視する従来の物理モデルには疑問が残る。田中らは、コロイドのゲル化の全過程を共焦点顕微鏡により一粒子レベルで追跡することで、ゲル化の際には、四面体形成、多四面体のクラスター形成を経て、中距離の非晶質秩序が自己触媒的に形成され、それにより相分離が凍結されることを発見した。この発見は、長年の常識を覆すもので、Nature Physicsに掲載され、同時に同誌のview pointで取り上げられた。
ボゾンピークの起源について:これまでボゾンピークとして知られるアモルファス物質特有の過剰な振動状態密度の起源は、凝縮系物理学の長年の謎として認識されてきた。これまで、アモルファス物質の硬さが空間的に不均一であることによるフォノンの散乱によるという説が有力と考えられてきた。これに反し田中らは、アモルファス固体の分子動力学シミュレーションにより、ボゾンピークとして知られる過剰な振動状態の起源が、有限の長さの一次元的なひも状の粒子群の協同的な振動に起因していることを発見した。今回の発見は、従来の説を明確に否定するとともに、新しい機構を提案するものである。この成果は、アモルファス物質の乱れた構造がもたらす、結晶とは大きく異なる物性の基礎的な理解に貢献するだけでなく、アモルファス物質の低温熱物性の制御にも大きく貢献すると期待される。この研究も、Nature Physicsに掲載され、同誌のview pointで取り上げられた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

1)ソフトマターの力学的組織化と力学的最適設計:力学的自己組織化の例として、重力下におけるコロイドゲルのネットワーク構造の自己組織化とそれに伴うトポロジー変化、さらには降伏応力の変化について、共焦点レーザー顕微鏡による一粒子観察と数値シミュレーションを駆使して、明らかにする。また、高分子溶液系の粘弾性相分離に関して、その微視的な機構を明らかにすべく、流体粒子ダイナミクス法を用いた数値計算による研究を行う。さらに、アクティブマターの力学的自己組織化の機構に関しても研究も進める。
2)力学的トポロジーと流動:電解質高分子の凝縮やたんぱく質のフォールディングにおける流体力学的相互作用の役割について、流体粒子ダイナミクス法を用いて明らかにする。また、コロイド分散系に見られるシアシニング現象の物理的な機構の解明を目指す。
3)相互作用ネットワークトポロジーに基づくアモルファス物質の物性解明:ガラスとゲルは、乱れた構造と固体的な力学特性をあわせ持つ物質状態であるが、その類似点、相違点はいまだに明らかではない。そこで、これらの系のエイジング過程における構造・力学物性の変化に着目し、これらの問題を解明する予定である。また、ガラス転移に伴う遅いダイナミクスの構造的起源を探るとともに、構造とダイナミクスを結びつける微視的な過程として、T1過程に着目してその役割を明らかにする予定である。一方、圧力に誘起されたアモルファス・アモルファス転移のダイナミクスにおいて、力学的因子が果たす役割に関しても、シリコンをモデル系として用い研究を行う。さらに、空間的に均一なアモルファスな構造を持つ新たな固体状態として、密度が均一化された超均一状態が注目されている。これまで、最高度に均一化された第一種超均一状態は実現されてこなかったが、その実現を目指す。
