Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、物質の基本粒子である陽子の大きさの正確な決定です。電子とμ粒子で測定された陽子半径に深刻な不一致が見出され、現代物理学上の大きな問題となっています。不一致は標準理論を超える電子とμ粒子間の相違の可能性を示唆し、また半径の不定さは原子核構造やRydberg定数の不定さに影響するためです。本研究は、従来の研究ではなし得なかった測定上の不定性を極限まで排する測定を実現することで信頼度の高い半径決定を目指します。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2022年度までに全測定装置の設置及び立ち上げは終了し、バックグランド対策もほぼ終了している。2023年度は加速器からの電子ビームを使い実際の測定条件下でのバックグランドや散乱電子用スペクトロメータの運動量分解能などの性能評価のための測定を行なった。陽子半径決定に耐える質のデータ収集が可能と判断したために、今年度はCH2 を標的として陽子電荷半径測定のための電子弾性散乱断面積測定を開始した。
なお測定と並行して、標的として用いているCH2の化学分析を実施したところ、炭素 C と水素 H 以外に少量ではあるが多数の他の元素が混入していることが明らかになった。電子陽子断面積測定精度として 1/1000を目指している。電子弾性散乱断面積は原子番号 Z の2乗に比例するため、たとえ少量でもZの大きな重い元素の存在には注意する必要がある。そのため、2023年に予定していた本格測定を2024年度に延期し、標的の化学分析を集中的に行なった。そして化学分析結果を受けたシミュレーションの結果、深刻な影響はないことを確認し、陽子電荷半径決定に向けた多数の運動学下での本格的な断面積測定を開始する判断をした。並行して2023年度には本研究に参加している大学院生(D2)1名を連れて渡米、共同研究者である米国ハンプトン大の Michael Kohl 教授らの研究グループと、焦点面検出器について開発状況の確認と今後の開発の進め方について打ち合わせを行なった。

Reason

「研究実績」に記したように、2023年度中に陽子電荷半径決定に向けた電子・陽子弾性散乱断面積の本格的測定に着手することができた。計画では2023年度内に測定を終了するはずであったが、測定の一部は2024年度に実施し、データ解析ののち同年度中には陽子電荷半径を決定、論文として発表する。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2023年度に開始した電子・陽子弾性散乱断面積測定を2024年度も継続する。2024年度はより大きな運動量移行領域での測定を行う。そして合計で13点の運動量移行値で陽子半径決定に必要な電荷形状因子を決定し、その傾きから半径値を決定する。また2024年度中には決定した陽子電荷半径値を論文発表するとともに、陽子半径に関連した研究者を世界から招き仙台で国際会議を開催する。
