Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では,空中ディスプレイ光学系に偏光変調を活用した多重反射を導入することで空中ディスプレイの薄型化を実現する.薄型化した空中ディスプレイを水槽内に設置することで水中に映像を形成する.没入型の水中映像空間(水中CAVE)により世界で初めて魚に水中映像を見せる.これまでは水中に映像を提示する実験では,映像のある位置に何らかの物理的ハードウェアが存在するため,純粋に光情報だけを手掛かりとする刺激の提示は不可能であった.純粋に光情報だけを刺激として魚の行動を観察する「VR生物学」の学術領域を拓く.さらに,水中ディスプレイに表示した定規映像を用いて水中で魚の平均体長・体重を深層学習により推定する.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

空中ディスプレイを薄型化光学について光学設計とプロトタイプ開発の両面から原理を実証した.複数枚のビームスプリッターを用いることにより多方向の空中表示を行った.さらに,スリット状の再帰反射素子を用いることで,光源とビームスプリッターを平行に配置することで薄型化する光学設計について視野角を解析するとともに,スクロール表示の有効性を明らかにした.水を通して観察される映像に対する画質に関する感性評価実験を行い,水の有無により特定の空間周波数領域で差が見られることがわかった.
魚を対象とした深層学習の学習データの蓄積とVR動物学実験を行った.高産肉性トラフグの養育を続けるとともに遺伝子解析を行った.水槽内を泳ぐ魚に対して視覚刺激として提示される水中映像が,水面の形状に対してロバストとなる新しい光学系を考案してその有効性を実験で示した.水中映像に対する魚の行動実験を行い,多重結像された水中映像が魚にとって視覚的な壁として機能している行動が観察された.
フグの養殖水槽を撮影した映像から対象魚をAIにより抽出するニューラルネットワークの構築に成功した.さらに,水産養殖水槽にカメラを設置してネットワークを通じて養殖水槽を監視できるシステムを開発した.
空中ディスプレイの性能評価指標とその計測方法について,IEC/TC110/WG6での国際標準化を進めた.新しい空中表示として,奥行き融合錯視による空中3Dディスプレイを構築して観察実験により輝度比に応じた奥行きが知覚されることを明らかにした.
光工学分野の展示会(光とレーザーの科学技術展),一般向けの大規模展示会(CEATEC),および国際会議IDW (International Display Workshops)においてデモ展示,空中ディスプレイ技術を用いた演劇や能舞台の公演など,社会実装やアウトリーチ活動を行った.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

空中ディスプレイは,広い範囲から光を集束させることで何もない空中に映像を形成する技術であり,本研究では空中ディスプレイの高画質化と薄型化を実現する光学系を開発する.薄型化された空中ディスプレイを水槽の中に設置して,水中映像空間(水中CAVE)を実現して,魚への水中映像提示の有効性を実験により明らかにすることを本課題の目的としている.具体的には,光工学・生物学・水産学・感性メディア工学・情報工学の研究者による異分野融合により次の6つの課題を解決することを目標としている.①再帰反射による空中結像(AIRR)に偏光変調と多重反射を導入して薄型化を実現する.②水中CAVEを世界で初めて実現する.③水中の映像に対するヒトの奥行き知覚特性を明らかにする.④水中CAVEシステムを魚への刺激映像の提示に用いたVR動物学実験を行う.⑤養殖水槽のリモート監視システムを構築して⑥養殖魚の平均体長・平均体重を推定するシステムを構築する.
これらの6項目に対して目標達成に向けて計画通りに進めるとともに,水産養殖現場の映像を用いたAIによるフグの検出に成功したほか,派生技術に関する産学連携や社会実装について当初の計画以上に進展している.令和5年度には空中ディスプレイが現代能『VR能 攻殻機動隊』に用いられて東京やベネチアで公演されるなど,当初の計画以上に進展している.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

研究計画の当初は,国立研究開発法人水産研究・教育機構 瀬戸内海区水産研究所 資源生産部 養殖生産グループの香川県高松市にある研究施設において,高産肉性トラフグを飼育して実験予定であったが,水産研究・教育機構における研究施設の整理統合により廃止となるため,このトラフグ親魚を共同開発した水産養殖会社において,契約により,系統の維持管理が行われることとなり,本課題の研究についても同社の協力をいただいて継続できることとなった.同社の協力により,水産養殖水槽の遠隔監視システムの実証試験を行うなど,連携を密にしている.ヒラメに対して緑色の照明を用いた養殖がトレンドであることを伺い,本研究課題の派生技術を用いることで,光利用効率を高めるとともに作業環境の改善の可能性がある.緑色照明の利用は水産養殖業において競争分野となっているため基本特許を出願できるように進めたい.ライトフィールドによる3D表示や派生技術の現代能や映画への応用について,これらの分野に実績を有する非常勤研究員の雇用により,研究の深化と展開を加速させる.
