Outline of Research at the Start

海氷は、ある場所で生成し別の場所で融解すると、熱と塩(淡水)を輸送する。この輸送過程を全球規模で明らかにする目的で、今まで作成されたことのない、海氷生産・融解量の全球データセットを、衛星マイクロ波放射計データを中心に用いて、過去43年間分作成する。手法やデータセットの検証には、係留系、自動昇降式フロート、バイオロギング等による観測データに用いる。作成したデータセットは公表するとともに、それを用いて現在起こりつつある底層水や中層水の変質と海氷による熱塩輸送の関係を明らかにする。さらに、海氷を介しての鉄などの物質循環のプロセスを明らかにする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

海氷生産量に関しては、南大洋において、衛星マイクロ波放射計AMSR2の薄氷厚アルゴリズムを改良し、気象データに最新のERA5を用いるなどして、2002年から2022年までの20年間について、海氷生産量の見積もりの再構築を行った。そのうえで、海氷生産量の時系列データと南極底層水の変動との比較などを行った。また、SSM/I、SMMRの低周波数チャンネルによる薄氷厚アルゴリズムの開発を完成させた。これにより、45年間の全球の海氷生産量を見積もる体制が整った。海氷融解量に関しては、春季の水温・塩分データの表層塩分欠損量等から融解量を見積もるという手法をオホーツク海、ベーリング海、バフィン湾/ラブラドル海に適用し、海氷融解量のデータセットを作成した。この新たに構築したデータセットからは、温暖化による海氷融解量の減少トレンドや海氷生産量の時空間変動との対応など、初めての海氷融解量の定量化を活かした研究を行うことができた。これらのデータセットは、昨年度作成した南大洋の海氷融解量データセットと合わせて、開発中のAMSRによる海氷融解量推定アルゴリズムの検証データに利用される。観測としては、南大洋において、第65次日本南極地域観測隊のもと、海氷融解直後域での集中XCTD観測やしらせからのバスケット(人が降りて作業するかご)を利用した海氷サンプリングを行うことができ、海氷による物質輸送と生物生産の関係解明に資するデータを取得できた。さらに、コロナ禍により今まで現地へ赴けなかった北極チュクチ海観測拠点バロー及びアラスカ大学を訪問し、チュクチ海での係留系観測データを取得し、過去に取得したデータと合わせて、北極ポリニヤ域を起点とする海氷による物質輸送に関わるデータの初期解析を行った。

Reason

衛星による海氷生産量・融解量推定の信頼性を高めるには、現場データによる検証が必須である。昨年度の海氷生産量に関しての現場検証に引き続き、今年度は海氷融解量の現場検証データセットを両半球にわたって作成できたので、衛星による海氷融解量推定アルゴリズムを完成させる見通しが立った。これらにより、現場データの検証を得た海氷生産量と海氷融解量の長期時系列データの作成が可能となり、底層水や中層水の変動との関連や、海氷による熱塩輸送の定量化が可能となる。一方、第64次及び第65次日本南極地域観測隊の協力のもと、十分な海氷サンプルが取得できたので、これらの分析と衛星海氷データとを合わせて解析することで、サブ課題の一つである、海氷を介する物質輸送と生物生産に関する研究を大きく前進させることができる。以上、本課題の目的である、海氷による熱・塩・物質輸送の定量化に必要な、衛星海氷アルゴリズムの開発と現場観測データの取得が予定通りに進んでいる。また、本課題に関する論文も、今年度、国際誌に9本出版されている。以上より、本課題はおおむね順調に進展している、と判断する。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

衛星マイクロ波放射計SSM/I、SMMRによる薄氷厚アルゴリズムの開発が完了したので、現在行っている全球での45年間の海氷生産量のデータセット作成を完成させる。海氷融解量についても、両半球で行ってきた現場海洋観測データからの海氷融解量の見積もりを検証データとして、AMSRによる海氷融解推定アルゴリズムを完成させ、全球の海氷融解量データセットを作成する。海氷生産量と融解量データを合わせて解析することで、海氷による全球規模の熱塩輸送を見積もる。観測からの見積もりは世界初となる。一方、南極観測しらせからのバスケット観測により多数の海氷サンプルが得られたので、本年度は海氷中に含まれている物質の同定など分析に集中して、海氷が物質輸送に果たす役割を南大洋をテストサイトして明らかにする。オホーツク海でも海氷サンプリング及び海氷融解後の海洋集中観測を行ってきたので、それらのデータを解析することで、この海域における海氷を介する物質輸送と生物生産の関係の理解を深める。
