Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、超巨大ブラックホール(SMBH: SuperMassive Black Hole)スピン測定である。どのようにSMBHが、母銀河に影響を与えてきたのかは天文学最大の謎である。この謎を解明する鍵が、活動銀河核(AGN: Active Galactic Nucleus)ジェットである。AGNジェットは、光速の99%で母銀河に達する、宇宙最大級の高エネルギー現象である。しかしながら、その形成機構は未解明である。その最有力候補が、磁気駆動型ジェットである。この場合、SMBHの回転により、磁場を絡ませる必要がある。すなわち、SMBHスピン測定は、ジェット形成機構を解明する上で重要である。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

活動銀河核(Active Galactic Nucleus: AGN)のトーラス構造の理解は、非常に重要である。AGNは、超巨大質量ブラックホール(SuperMassive Black Hole: SMBH)への質量降着により、約10億太陽光度で銀河中心が明るく輝く現象である。AGNの構造は、降着円盤がSMBHを取り囲み、さらにトーラスと呼ばれる構造が、これらを取り囲んでいると考えられている。このAGNトーラスは、母銀河からSMBHへの質量供給の役割を担うと考えられている。すなわち、AGNトーラスの理解は、SMBHと銀河の共進化を理解する上で非常に重要である。しかしながら、その構造やその形成機構は未だに理解されていない。
トーラス構造を調べるには、X線偏光観測が最適な手段の1つである。何故なら、X線は、AGNトーラス内のガスによりCompton散乱され、偏光するためである。すなわち、その偏光度は、AGNトーラスの形状や密度に強く依存する。近年、X線天文衛星Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE)により、最近傍のCompton-thick AGNであるCircinus galaxyのX線偏光が初めて検出された。この偏光度を説明するために、単純な幾何構造を仮定したAGNトーラスからの輻射輸送計算がいくつか行われている。
そこで私は、より現実的な、輻射駆動噴水モデルに基づいた、偏光度計算に取り組んだ。ここで輻射駆動噴水モデルとは、非等方な紫外線放射やX線加熱により、非定常なAGNトーラスのような構造を形成する理論モデルである。この結果、私は、IXPEにより観測されたCircinus galaxyの偏光度の再現に成功した。これは、X線偏光の起源が、Compton-thickなfailed windであることを示唆する。
