Outline of Research at the Start

本研究課題では、主に琥珀に封入された絶滅甲虫の化石を用いた形態の探索を行い、マイクロCTスキャンに代表されるような最新技術を駆使してそれらの形態進化史を解明するとともに、これまで研究が進んでこなかった交尾器に代表される内部形態の抽出にも取り組む。その後、得られた形態情報を現生種も含む系統解析に活用することで、系統樹内での化石のより正確な系統的位置の把握を行い、現代に至るまでの甲虫の各分類群における進化史の解明を目指す。これら一連の研究は、純粋な記載分類が一般的だった昆虫化石の研究を次世代型の古生物学へと大きく進展させる可能性がある。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

最終年度は査読付き英文論文の成果発表が極めて順調であり、計17編が出版された。具体的な内訳は、単著2編、筆頭兼責任著者5編、責任著者1編、その他共著9編である。加えて共著1編が出版を待っている。

共著論文ではあるものの、本年度最大の成果は、白亜紀の琥珀中のアリ化石から頭部の内部形態を3D構築するのに成功したことであろう (Richter et al., 2022, Insect Systematics and Diversity)。本研究は中生代の昆虫化石における軟組織の精密な立体構造を初めて明らかにした例となり、筋肉系だけでなく、中枢神経系や脳といった微細で脆弱な軟体部の解剖学的情報も三次元的に得られた。同時に採餌行為の鍵となる大顎の形態抽出にも成功し、現代のアリに見られる「シャベル型」の大顎の形成過程についても議論した。当該成果は保存状態が例外的に優れた化石が基になっているが、本研究は社会性昆虫としてのアリの繁栄を考える上で重要な知見になるかもしれない。本研究以外にも、ベニボタル科甲虫のErotinae亜科における警告色の進化史を明らかにした論文は、責任著者として貢献した主要な業績と言える (Motyka et al., 2023, iScience)。これは始新世バルト琥珀から発見されたベニボタル科甲虫の化石から着想を得て、分子と形態の双方から系統解析を行い、始新世当時から色鮮やかな警告色を有するベニボタルがいたものと推測された。その他の特筆すべき研究として、顕著に肥大化した後脚を有する約1億年前のエンマムシ甲虫を新種として発表するとともに、そのような形態的特殊化が好蟻性と関係している可能性について論じた論文を発表した (Yamamoto & Caterino, 2022, Palaeoworld)。

これら一連の研究により、本研究が目指していた目標課題は概ね達成された。
