Outline of Research at the Start

To investigate the issues related to expropriation and compensation for physical assets such as agricultural and residential land and buildings of the households affected by the Aynak mining project in Afghanistan and to find sustainable solutions to those problems.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I investigated the sociocultural and economic impacts of displacement due to the development of Aynak copper mine project in Afghanistan and designed a desirable compensation policy that best fits with the socioeconomic situation of the mine affected community. Summary of my research is presented as below.
[1] In the 1st phase, indepth interviews with the village leaders and local government were conducted to understand the situation of affected people and the compensation problem.
[2] To design a compensation policy for, a randomized conjoin field experiment was conducted and collected 2800 choice responses from 280 affected households in the Aynak mine affected villages. The findings indicate that optimal compensation policy that receive highest support from the affected people should include restoration of social capital, housing, and agricultural land. the study also estimated the average lower bound of willingness to accept relocation, which is about USD 11,000. This study was published in the Resources Policy Journal.
[3] Just before the regime change in Afghanistan in August 2021, I completed the household socioeconomic survey to measure the long-term impacts of forced relocation. Using DID approach, the results show that the socioeconomic status of the households has not been improved; suffering from poverty and losses of social networks. However, access to education, markets, and health facilities for the relocated households compared to unrelocated ones has increased.
[4] I have published several peer-reviewed articles in the 2020 and 2021.
