Outline of Research at the Start

This research firstly attempts to address two questions: why has solitary laughter been relegated to a position of almost complete silence?; how has solitary laughter been marginalized? It then seeks, through affect theory and related philosophy such as that of Deleuze to articulate ways in which solitary laughter may be conceived differently. Ultimately, it attempts to show how laughter may serve positive functions in the context of dramatic social change in which solitude itself is being reconfigured and reappraised.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The research was able to establish that there has been extremely little academic writing and research on the subject of solitary laughter, Based on this finding, the researcher joined informally with English researchers in the field of psychology to begin exploring a research and therapeutic methodology combining positive psychology and the qualitative method of autoethnography. This led to publication of an article proposing such an approach.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

This was the first time that an extensive literature review across research fields on the subject of solitary laughter has been undertaken. The methodology article that was later produced represents the first formal merging of the field of positive psychology with autoethnographic method.
