| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究課題は、中世フランスの叙事詩『ローランの歌』の受容が日本の近現代で果たした役割を明らかにすることを目的とする。明治・大正・昭和期の日本の学者たち（とくに前田長太、坂丈緒、佐藤輝夫）によるこの作品の紹介・翻訳・研究を、「（中世フランスの事物・制度を表現するための）言葉の創造」、「自文化との対比」、「政治的・社会的文脈」という三つのテーマを通して検証する。そしてこれらの検証を通じて「日本人によるフランス文化ひいては西洋文化の受容は、近現代の日本人にとってどのような意義があったのか、そしてこの受容は多極化する今日の世界でどのような意味をもつのか」という問いに応えたい。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project examines the reception and impact of The Song of Roland, the most famous medieval French epic, in modern Japan. In particular, it clarifies how The Song of Roland was interpreted and introduced under the influence of themes such as "defeat" and "destruction" through the image of "bushido" and Japanese war tales from before to after WWII. In the process, it investigates and reevaluates the achievements of scholars such as Ban Takeo and Sato Teruo, who played a significant role in introducing, translating, and researching The Song of Roland in Japan. It also looks at the postwar adaptation as children's literature and shows how the work was widely accepted in Japanese society throughout the 20th century.

本研究の学術的・社会的な意義は、中世フランス文学の研究や作品紹介を限られた好事家や研究者の興味の対象としてではなく、日本の近代化の歩みと密接に結び付いたものとして示したことにある。また中世フランス文学の代表作である『ローランの歌』の「日本的」解釈のありかたを示しそれを海外の研究者とも共有した。つまり本研究課題を通じて研究代表者は、日本社会に対しては近現代における西洋文化受容の具体例とその意義を示し、またフランスなど海外の研究者コミュニティに対しては、西洋の文化遺産が日本において再解釈・土着化される過程を明らかにし、もって日本の人文学の独創的側面を示したといえるだろう。
