Outline of Research at the Start

In second language (L2) pedagogy, research suggests that when learners know less than 98-99% of the words in a written text, vocabulary knowledge can limit comprehension. This project aims to improve upon past research by using a more precise measure of vocabulary knowledge. It will either provide firmer grounding for the current view or offer evidence for a different level of needed coverage. The latter would substantially impact our understanding of the vocabulary learning burden for English language learners, influence pedagogy, and guide the development of vocabulary tests and lists.
