Outline of Research at the Start |
In this study, the effect of local (in their own university class) and international (living in Canada) L2 role models on the motivation and ideal L2 self will be measured. If results are positive, online exchanges could be recommended for university students learning English.
|
Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A major result was the detailing of the importance of peer modeling on L2 motivation. Capable role models demonstrate coping strategies and self-efficacy (similar to self-confidence). Students learn from these role models and adapt their own behaviours in an attempt to become better English speakers. The article detailed the identification and behavioural changes process by using microanalysis. The article also showed the transformative effect that identification with capable role models has on the ideal L2 self. Therefore, an essential element of any language learning program is role models, in particular, peer models.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
Japanese students learning English have often been found to be lacking motivation. One reason is the lack of effective role models. My research shows the positive effect of role models. Students need to see high level ability as well as the behaviours that lead to that high ability.
