| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、近世英領西インド諸島のアフリカ系奴隷人口問題を題材に、異文化からの家族形成行動への政策的介入に奴隷社会が階層ごとにどのように異なる対応を示したかを明らかにする。キリスト教的単婚を良しとしアフリカ的複婚を悪習と見做す思想を土台とした政策は、どの程度受容されたのか、その結果当地の奴隷労働者家族関係にどのような変容がもたらされたのか、を解明する。それを通して文化が異文化からの強制によりどのように、またどの程度変容するものなのか、またその過程で当該社会にどのような内的緊張が生まれるかを明らかにするものである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project forcus on the behavior of female slaves on the production and reproduction in the 18th and 19th centuries British West Indies.The analysis suggests that coupling among slaves declined in automn and incleased in summer, which means they hesitated coupling in the busy seasons.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
18・19世紀西インド諸島の奴隷社会における低出生と高死亡率問題は、人口学と人口政策の歴史的起源に深く関連している。本研究は、低出生の要因として過酷な労働条件が挙げられることをサトウキビ農園の季節的な業務スケジュールと彼らの出生記録との史料連結で確認すると同時に、奴隷の出生の季節的な変動が、日ごろは非農場仕事に従事し繁忙期にサトウキビ作付けに動員されたグループにおいて特に顕著であることを発見し、過酷な労働条件に慣れない集団ほど屈辱感が大きく出生数の低下を招きやすいと推論する。これが本研究の学術的な意義である。また社会的意義は、低出生と労働条件との関連をより深く議論する機縁になる点が挙げられる。
