化学兵器使用の停止のために、被害国でもなんでもない第三国が軍事介入することは合法である、と考える場合、２つの根拠が考えられる。第一に、化学兵器の使用が発生した時に、これらの兵器が他国に拡散する可能性があってやがては自国が化学兵器の脅威にさらされる、という発想からの軍事介入が考えられる。これは自国の個別利益のための行動である。第二に、化学兵器使用が国際社会全体の重要な規範の違反であるから、これをやめさせねばならないという発想がありえる。この発想に基づく軍事介入は、国際社会の共通利益のための行動である。これらの二つの仮説のいずれを現代国際社会が支持・容認しているかを主に事例から検討する。

最終年度の病欠により最終年度の作業に遅れが発生した（研究費の返却分は収支決算報告書上は表示されない）。そのため、化学兵器の使用を理由とする軍事介入に関連する安全保障の力学、他の大量破壊兵器の国際的規制等を対象とした書籍の書評のみ研究成果として本欄に掲載した。
