Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This study targeted the Amami Islands, including World Natural Heritage sites, aiming to enhance learning about the life and diversity of plants and animals in elementary schoolyards. Comprehensive plant surveys were conducted in schoolyards on Kikaijima, Amami Oshima, Kakeromajima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabujima, and Yoronjima, resulting in species lists for each site. Insect surveys, focusing on crickets and grasshoppers, were also carried out on Amami Oshima and Okinoerabujima. Furthermore, nature-themed lessons focusing on the natural environment, plants, and seasonal changes of Amami were provided to elementary school students, along with outdoor plant observation sessions and workshops on making plant specimens. Through these activities, the study explored educational methods for teaching biodiversity in science and environmental education, and examined the use of wild flora and fauna as teaching materials.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
