Outline of Research at the Start

白色矮星連星の最期の姿であるIa型超新星は、爆発後の光度変化に個性がなく、永らく宇宙論的距離にある標準光源とされてきたが、近年、光度やスペクトルの変動に多様性があることが指摘され、我々の宇宙を理解する上で不定性の一因となってきた。本研究はIa型超新星の多様性の起源を解明すべく、研究期間中に稼働するX線分光撮像衛星XRISMによる過去最高のX線分光能力を最大限に活かす研究である。具体的には、爆発前の親星である白色矮星連星の重力ポテンシャルの高精度計測や、爆発直後の高温プラズマ分光による精密ドップラー計測、および、爆発後の残骸のプラズマ診断を駆使して、多方面からIa型超新星の多様性を探る。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、Ia型超新星の多様性の起源を解明すべく、X線分光撮像衛星XRISMによる過去最高のX線分光能力を最大限に活かし、爆発前の親星である白色矮星連星の重力ポテンシャルの高精度計測や、爆発直後の高温プラズマ分光による精密ドップラー計測、および、爆発後の残骸のプラズマ診断を行う課題である。具体的には、課題i) 白色矮星連星のX線分光を通じた sub-Chandrasekhar 質量の重い白色矮星の探査、課題ii) Ia型超新星の爆発直後での即時分光観測による親星の同定と輝線のドップラー計測による非対称性の診断、課題iii) Ia型超新星残骸の高温プラズマの高分解能分光観測によるプラズマ診断を用いた SD/DD分別と撮像観測による非対称性の診断、および、課題 iv) X線分光撮像衛星XRISMの観測性能強化の4課題を実施する。
本研究に使用するXRISM衛星の打ち上げが延期され、令和五年度末の科学観測の開始に至るまで、研究代表者は、XRISM衛星の科学観測開始にむけた準備作業にエフォートを割かざるを得なかった。ゆえに令和五年度は、課題 iv) XRISM観測性能強化に注力し、XRISM衛星の科学運用準備、特に、データ較正を行う高次データ処理のパイプライン開通作業や、検出器較正観測を実施した。課題 i) に関しては、米国Chandra衛星を用いた強磁場白色矮星の精密X線分光データを用いて、高温プラズマの輝線エネルギーを定量化し、重力赤方偏移と降着ドップラー効果を分離、2天体の白色矮星の質量計測に成功した。課題 ii) , iii) に関しては、XRISM衛星の初期運用期においてIa型超新星の残骸の観測を実施し、その分光データの解析を開始した。

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

5節に記載した通り、XRISM衛星稼働に向けた4課題の準備は着実に進んでおり、研究はほぼ順調に進展している。しかし、HIIIロケット不具合や天候不順の影響で、XRISM衛星の打ち上げが予定よりさらに延期され9月にずれこんだ。その後の初期衛星運用も予定の3か月では完了せず、本格的な科学観測を行なうPV期の開始も2月中旬まで伸びた。そのため、令和五年度は、XRISM衛星の科学観測を実施する期間はほとんど取れていない。令和五年度は、XRISM衛星による白色矮星や超新星残骸の観測を実施する計画であったが、それがほとんど実現できなかったため、研究進捗は「遅れている」という評価とした。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

7節の通り、XRISM衛星の科学観測開始が遅れたために、研究準備期間に約1年の遅れが発生している。幸い、令和五年度末にはXRISM衛星の科学観測は無事に開始できており、本研究に用いる超新星残骸の観測も実施されたばかりで、令和六年度には白色矮星の観測も実施される予定である。令和六年度はいよいよXRISM衛星を用いた研究を展開できる時期となる。ただし、稼働したばかりの観測装置を使用するには、搭載機器の特性の計測や較正作業が必須であるため、令和六年度は、白色矮星や超新星残骸の科学観測と並行して、較正作業も実施する。本研究課題の提案時には、この天体観測と装置較正作業を2年間をかけて実施する予定であったため、最終年度である令和六年度に、準備期間の1年の遅れを取り戻せない場合は、研究期間の延長を検討する必要がある。
