Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では,堆積物中の宇宙塵流入量変動を高分解能で見積もる研究を推進し,全地球史を通した宇宙塵流入履歴の復元と,地球表層環境変動との因果関係を明らかにすることを目的とする.そのため,宇宙線照射に伴う中性子捕獲反応により変動する白金族元素の安定同位体をトレーサーとした新たな宇宙物質検出法の確立を目指す.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では,宇宙線に伴う中性子捕獲反応により変動する白金族元素(特に白金,オスミウム)の安定同位体をトレーサーとして,巨大天体衝突だけでなく,宇宙塵大量流入によって地球表層にもたらされた微小サイズの宇宙物質流入量を,堆積物試料中から見積もる新しい手法を確立することを目的としている.そのため2023年度は,高精度での安定同位体分析を行うための最適試料として,先行研究によりイリジウムの異常濃集が確認された三畳紀-ペルム紀境界の付加体層状チャートに焦点を当てた.安定同位体分析の遂行にあたっては,全岩試料から白金族元素高濃度層を割り出す必要がある.そのため前段階として,石英ガラス製チューブを用いた同位体希釈-質量分析法により,チャートおよび頁岩試料を対象として高時間解像度での白金族元素濃度およびオスミウム同位体比分析を行った.その結果,約1 mの範囲において,宇宙物質の流入履歴を示す白金族元素高濃度層が見出された.白金およびオスミウムの安定同位体異常を捉えるためには,100 ng程度の単離元素が必要とされていることから,これらの元素の濃縮試料の作成を行った.特に,白金族元素が高濃度で含まれていた頁岩3試料,チャート2試料を対象として,250ミクロン以下の粒子を回収後,磁性分離を行うことで白金族元素の濃縮作業を行った.さらに,作成した白金族元素濃縮試料を用いて,溶媒抽出によるオスミウムの単離および陰イオン交換樹脂による白金の単離作業に着手した.

Reason

2023年度は,新たな堆積物試料を対象とした白金族元素濃度およびオスミウム同位体分析により,宇宙塵の流入を示唆する白金族元素高濃度層を検出するに至った.これにより,白金族元素濃縮試料の作成は順調に進んでいるといえる.また,安定同位体分析に必要なオスミウムおよび白金の単離作業に着手しているが,堆積物試料中の同位体異常を捉えることが可能な試料量の調整が難航している.堆積物試料を用いた最適試料の作成のためには,新たに白金族元素が高濃度で含まれる領域を数mmの範囲で割り出す作業を行う必要が生じたことから,研究の進捗状況はやや遅れていると判断した.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

堆積物試料を用いた系統的な白金族元素濃度およびオスミウム同位体分析により,白金族元素高濃度層の同定は完了しているが,安定同位体分析のためのオスミウムおよび白金の濃縮・単離が思うように進んでいない.そのため,2024年度は新たな対策として,白金族元素濃度高濃度層を対象に研磨片を作成し,蛍光X線面分析を行い,親鉄元素の濃集範囲を数mmの範囲で割り出すことで,地球物質による希釈が最小限となる試料を作成する計画である.
